Vietnam Visa on Arrival for UAE Residents: Latest Rules for 2026

Someone gets to the gate at Dubai International with a flight to Hanoi and a plan to sort the visa when they land.

The airline won’t board them.

This happens often enough that it’s worth being blunt about why. “Visa on arrival” sounds like it means what it says. Land, queue, get a visa, walk out. That version of the system stopped operating years ago and hasn’t come back.

What Vietnam runs now is different. You get a pre-approved letter from a licensed Vietnamese agency before you fly. You print it. You carry it. At the airport in Vietnam, you take it to a counter and they stamp the actual visa into your passport. The stamping happens on arrival. The approval doesn’t.

No letter means no boarding pass, and the airline staff in Dubai are the ones who check.

Your Three Options From the UAE

Nobody flying from the UAE gets in without something. Vietnam doesn’t do visa-free for Emirati passports or for expats living here.

The e-visa. This is what most people should use and it’s genuinely improved. Up to 90 days now, multiple entry, done entirely online at evisa.gov.vn, back in three to five working days. No agency. No approval letter. No embassy.

If you’re in the UAE on an Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, British, American or most other passports, this is your route. It covers holidays and short business trips without complication.

Visa on arrival with the approval letter. Apply through a licensed Vietnamese agency, letter arrives by email in two or three working days, print it, take it to the VOA counter with photos and a completed entry form, pay the stamping fee there in cash.

Two things constrain it. Air entry only, at an international airport, land and sea borders don’t accept it. And you’re paying an agency fee up front plus a stamping fee on arrival, so it’s not automatically cheaper than the e-visa. It’s just quicker when quick is the only thing that matters.

The embassy sticker visa through the Vietnam Embassy in Abu Dhabi. This is for the things the online system doesn’t handle. Work visas. Study. Investor categories. Long-term family visits. Or an e-visa that got rejected and needs a different approach.

So Which One Should You Actually Pick

The e-visa. For nearly everyone, nearly always.

It’s online, it doesn’t need a middleman, 90 days multiple entry covers most trips, and it skips the airport handling step completely.

The one situation where VOA makes sense: you’re flying in under four days and the e-visa won’t clear in time. Genuinely that’s the whole list. Some agencies do emergency letters in a couple of hours for people already standing in a terminal, which is useful when you need it, but nobody should be planning around it.

If you hold an Emirati passport specifically, check your e-visa eligibility with the Abu Dhabi embassy before assuming. Sources disagree on whether UAE nationals are included in the e-visa system, and a phone call settles it in five minutes.

The Things That Get Applications Rejected

Your name, written slightly wrong. This is the big one for UAE applicants and it catches people who did nothing careless.

Vietnam’s system reads the machine-readable zone, those two lines of characters at the bottom of your passport bio page. It doesn’t read your Emirates ID. It doesn’t read whatever version of your name appears on your visa or your labour card. If you type the shortened version you normally use, or reorder the names, or leave out a middle name that’s printed in the passport, the application fails. And the fee doesn’t come back.

Landing at the wrong airport. Your visa names an entry point. Your ticket has to match it. Booking into Da Nang while the visa says Ho Chi Minh City is a problem the visa itself can’t fix. Sort the entry port before you submit, because changing it later means starting again.

Passport validity measured from the wrong date. Six months minimum from when you leave Vietnam. Not from when you apply. People check the wrong date on this constantly.

Photos that don’t meet spec. Recent, white background, no glasses, full face. Something dug out of an old application usually doesn’t pass.

Leaving it late. Three to five working days, and weekends and Vietnamese public holidays aren’t working days. Applying Wednesday for a Sunday flight is optimistic.

What Happens After You Land

The visa gets you through immigration. A couple of things still trip people up afterwards.

Hotels handle your accommodation registration automatically, within 24 hours of check-in, and you won’t notice it happening. Stay in an apartment or with friends and it becomes the host’s job to register you locally. Skipping it can cause problems on the way out.

Health insurance proof is now expected for 90-day stays. Shorter trips generally don’t trigger it, but if you’re using the full validity, carry the documentation.

One more, relevant to a specific group: overseas Vietnamese living in the UAE, plus eligible spouses and children, may qualify for a five-year visa exemption certificate. Completely separate from the standard routes. Worth asking the embassy about if it applies to you.

When You Actually Need a Visa Service in Dubai

Straightforward e-visa, normal timeline? Use the portal. You don’t need us for that and it would be dishonest to suggest otherwise.

Where an agency genuinely matters is narrower. Emergency approval letters when the timeline has already collapsed. Embassy applications for work, study or investor categories where the paperwork is heavier and the requirements shift. Applications following a rejection, where the new file has to actually address what went wrong rather than repeat it. And family groups travelling together on different passports, where three people need three different processes for the same trip.

RAG Visa handles Vietnam applications from Dubai across all three routes, including last-minute approval letters and the embassy categories the online system doesn’t cover.

If the timing is tight or the situation isn’t simple, talk to us before you book flights, not after.
